Wakesurfers flying the flag for Hong Kong

Wakesurf worlds

Hong Kong’s wakesurfing team won one silver and two bronze medals at the 2026 IWWF World Wakesurf Championships at Lake Xianghu in Hangzhou, China. The event took place from the 12th to the 17th of October this year.

026 (Hong Kong) – 14 members of the Hong Kong Surfing team traveled to Xianghu Lake in Hangzhou, China. From October 12th to 17th compete in the 2026 IWWF World Wakesurf Championships.

Facing fierce competition from 120 top athletes from 19 countries and regions around the world, Hong Kong’s team of 14 surfers ultimately had nine athletes enter the finals.

The Hangzhou event was the highest-level wakesurf competition organized by the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF). It featured Surf & Skim, divided into five categories – U14, U18, Open, O30, and O40. Due to the new entry quota restrictions this year, Hong Kong focused on the first three more competitive categories (which are also the categories that are valued more under Hong Kong’s sports system).

The medalists were :

Wong Kaitlyn Gemma U18 Women’s Skim Silver medal
Wong Tze Hin U14 Men’s Skim Bronze medal
Lam Wai Kit Open Men’s Surf Bronze medal

Wong Kaitlyn Gemma won her silver medal in the U18 Girl’s Skim final with 60.50 points. Wong Tze-hin finished 3rd in the U14 Boys Skim final with 59.17 points while Lam Wai Kit won another medal in the Open Boy’s Surf category with 51.92 points, a particularly impressive performance.

Six other Hong Kong surfers advanced to the finals to put in creditable performances. They were:

Chan Matheo U14 Men’s Skim 5th place
Cheng Chun Hin Open Men’s Skim 6th place
Wu Kate Open Women’s Skim 4th place
Kanjanapas Dawnce Open Women’s Surf 4th place
Hung Dewey Michaja Open Women’s Surf 5th place
Lau Chun Fung Marcus U18 Men’s Skim 4th place
Wong Quinnton Tze Hin U14 Men’s Surf 5th place

Despite lacking home advantage and facing restrictions on the number of participants, the Hong Kong team still managed to win medals in some fiercely contested categories. This demonstrates the continued potential for the development of wakesurfing in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Waterskiing Association is taking the experience gained from the world championships to continue to promote training and youth development, giving more local athletes the opportunity to represent Hong Kong in international competitions.
